GrainSize: Software for sieve and hydrometer testing. The software's sieve and hydrometer test calculations are
compliant with ASTM C 136, ASTM C 117, ASTM D 422 and ASTM D 1140 standards, AASHTO
equivalents (AASHTO T 11, T 27 and T 88) and Australian Standards 1141.11, 1141.12 and 1289.3.6.1. GrainSize also includes partial support for ASTM D 2862 (particle size distribution of activated carbon), and
freely-downloadable support is available for various state DOT standards.

How to license GrainSize
Data may be entered as either raw testing data or as final calculated
test results (i.e., sieve size and percent passing): this allows you to
chart pre-calculated grain size tests without having access to the original
testing data. From your data GrainSize calculates fineness modulus, percentage
diameters (e.g., D10, D30 and D60), coefficient
of uniformity (Cu) and curvature (Cc), and fractional
components (e.g., the percentage of cobbles, gravel, sand, silt and clay
in the material tested). Fractional components can be calculated based
on the cobbles/gravel/sand/silt/clay particle sizes dictated by the user's
choice of ASTM, AASHTO, Wentworth, Burmister or Australian (AS 1726) standards.

Several different sieve testing methods (i.e., weighing each sieve and
its retained material, or weighing a cumulative pan) are supported, and
sieves may be entered as numbered (e.g., #10), inch-sized (e.g., 1") and/or
millimeter-sized (e.g., 75mm.).
Hydrometer support includes automatic interpolation of hydrometer temperature
correction values from a single correction reading, which eliminates the ASTM
D 422 Section 7.2 multiple correction values requirement. Both 151H and
152H hydrometers are supported.

Interactive curve shaping facility lets you remove poor data points
from the grain size distribution curve. |

Grain size test data can be printed in a variety
of different formats, including one that includes all of your raw test
readings (this is handy for archiving your test data in paper form). Additionally,
if the GEOSYSTEM Boring Log Drafting program is licensed, grain size values
such as percent passing the #200 sieve are available for inclusion on
boring log reports.
