Project files are stored as standard Windows folders on your hard disk or file server. When you create a new project, LOGDRAFT automatically creates a folder to hold the project's data files. This folder will have the name you gave to your project with ".GEO" added to the end. (For example, LOGDRAFT stores the file for a project named P290315
into a folder named P290315.geo
.) Because they're regular Windows folders, you can use Windows Explorer to move, copy, rename and delete them; however, there are a couple of cautionary notes to be aware of:
- When you use Explorer to rename a project, you must keep the ".GEO" at the end of the name. If you remove it, LOGDRAFT may not recognize the folder as a legitimate project.
- Do not use Windows Explorer to delete any of the individual files stored within a project's .GEO folder. If you want to delete a particular boring, test pit, etc. from your project, see the instructions given in this section; to delete data from a laboratory test, refer to this section.
- .GEO project folders can be used store other project documents (e.g., spreadsheets, word processor documents, CAD drawings). If you're using a newer GEOSYSTEM laboratory test program such as LabSuite4, you can configure the lab. test program to automatically place .PDF versions of each test report directly into your .GEO project directory for archival purposes.
A .GEO folder incorporates all of its project's information, so you can archive your project by creating a copy of the project's folder onto an archival medium such as a backup drive or USB stick by following the instructions given below.
To archive a project:
- Start Windows Explorer and navigate to the directory that you're using to store your project folders.
- Locate your project's folder (remember, it will have the name that you gave to your project, and end in ".GEO"), right-click on the folder, then from the menu that pops up, select Copy.
- Navigate to your archive folder, right-click anywhere inside the folder, then select Paste from the pop-up menu.
- If you've already copied your project to the archive folder, Windows will warn you about replacing existing files. This is OK, but you may wish to delete the old archive folder before walking through to avoid getting the warning.
To delete a project:
- Start Windows Explorer and navigate to the directory that you're using to store your project folders.
- Locate your project's folder, right-click on the folder, then select Delete from the pop-up menu.
